Winchelsea Pt II ....

23rd  January 2018 (Tuesday) .... 11.00     John and I picked the right day to go to Winchelsea;  yesterday was ‘sunny and dry’, today we have ‘foggy and damp’ .... not a day for going out anywhere.    It isn’t cold .... just bleak looking.I have plenty to keep me going from yesterday’s trip;  with much I want to look up:  I love history.    Winchelsea is only a small place, but a classic example of English history, and why the town is where it is... and ...with the town  being small,  it is easy to see the “whole picture”.... or what remains of the whole picture.

22nd January 2018 (Monday) .... 10.30    “Sunny Sussex” it is this morning, though there are clouds are over the South Downs..... but they are disappearing slowly towards the southeast.     It’s going to be a lovely day.... ‘sunny and warm’, could be a good day for doing things later.   I appear to be i/c at the moment .... so I’m going to have a cuppa.

23.55   I have, over the years found that Sussex is full of amazing surprises, and Winchelsea... pronounced Win – Chelsea ... is definitely one of them.    Today ‘JB’ and I visited Winchelsea;  not the biggest of places ....oh, while I remember it’s a town, not a village .... but huge in history.

The Winchelsea that we visited today is in fact the second town of the name;  the first having been lost to the sea in 1287.   Which is why today’s Winchelsea is perched on top of a hill.   Winchelsea was such an important seaport that, when the first Winchelsea was lost, King Edward the First lost no time in finding a new, safer site for thi…

Hmmmm .... dreich weather.

21st January 2018 (Sunday) .... Hmmmmm ... we have “bleak Sussex” this morning;   foggy and wetness ....  a grand morning for staying ‘in’, drinking tea!    I’m looking forward to going to Geoff and Pauline’s for Sunday lunch;  this is an absolutely perfect day for nice food and blethering.    The weather is set to start improving later on today, with warm air coming in from the Atlantic;   tomorrow we could have ‘sunny spells’.    ‘JB’ is off tomorrow and Tuesday, so we might be able to go for a run in the car, and have lunch somewhere.

20.00     Geoff and Pauline live in Horam, a village 12 miles east of Uckfield. Unfortunately with the weather being as it was I didn’t see much of the village, but it is on the edge of Ashdown Forest, and I imagine it would be a bonnie place to wander round.  Pauline, who is an excellent cook, had prepared a lamb roast for lunch, and it was ‘out of this world’.     This was followed by a scrumptious trifle: “Puku”, bless his flabby six pack, is a cont…

Schiehallion ....

20th January 2018 (Saturday) ....dearie me .... we have one dreich morning in Sussex, and the whole of the South of England for that matter.... not a stimulating start to Saturday.    The weather didn’t have much to cheer us up either;  this weather is to be with us for most of the day.He did impress me in another way though.    “Wee Sconie”, a weather watcher, had sent in picture of Schiehallion, and the weather man ‘Googled’ the name and found out Schiehallion’s place in scientific history:   which most Scots will know.    Schiehallion was selected by Charles Mason (1728 – 1786), an English astronomer, to calculate the mass of the Earth.    The experiment was carried out in 1774 by the Astronomer Royal, Nevil Maskelyne (1732 – 1811), assisted by the mathematician Charles Hutton (1737 – 1832).    Away from the experiment, Schiehallion a beautiful, and  popular, Munro (over 3000 feet);   with easy access, and a relaxing hill walk to the top.

Lovely morning

Image
19th January 2018 (Friday) .... 11.00     Sussex had a fairly hard frost first thing this morning  ....  everything was covered in a heavy rime;   and car windscreens had to be scraped.   Since then the sun has risen into a clear blue sky, and the rime has vanished, leaving us with a beautiful, warm, sunny day.    There’s not much wind, so very little wind chill;  I’ll go for a walk after this update.

20.30     The ‘boy’ is contented tonight;   though I haven’t done very much.    I did go for a  walk downtown, and bought a W H Smith ‘POSTbox’, in which I’ll send some stuff home .... I’m trying to lighten the case!    Mind you, the box I bought looked big enough in size roond the edges, but I’ve since found out that it’s not very deep, so won’t contribute that much to making the case lighter.   I’ll check their website to see what sizes are available.
It was lovely walking today, but there was a sharpness in the air.  The cold spell is to continue for another few days.     Sussex is fore…

Happy,.... and busy morning .....

18th January 2017 (Thursday) .... 15.00    I was ‘plan-less’ when I tumbled out of bed this morning at 08.00, but Janice, who is excellent at coming up with ‘plans’,  said “there’s a new Waitrose Supermarket in Haywards Heath, and I fancy having a look around it, do you want to come with me!”    I thought about it, for a nano second, and said “Yes”.   I had thought about doing the ironing.... but hey ho .... that could wait!
One breakfast,...  and 25 minutes later, we set orf for Haywards Heath, on a gorgeous Sussex morning.    It had been windy during the night, but the wind had moderated, and it was, by now, a pleasant Spring like morning.
Supermarkets down here in the south are big, but this one, being new and big, is imposing, and roomy,....  with escalator access from the car park to the main entrance.      We had a good ‘browse’, and bought haggis for our Burns Supper at “No 1”, plus a few other bits that Janice found.     I’d say that Waitrose prices are higher than average, bu…

Bonnie drying day ....

Image
17th January 2018 (Wednesday) .... 09.30     The washing machine is chugging away in the kitchen;   it’s a beautiful drying day and I have a washing going through.    This is ‘sunny Sussex’ at it’s best;   though it is cold in the brisk wind.    My plan is to do the washing, then bake a double batch o’ scones, before going downtown to the Post Office.   I’ll leave the walking until after lunch.    Must ‘go’.... ‘slight flap on’ .... I’m a busy boy this bonnie morning!

14.00    I’ve had a brilliant morning!    I did the washing, (which is nigh on dry so  will get ironed later), baked a double batch of scones, then sat outside on the swing seat had a cuppa .... and scone.    Although it’s breezy, and in fact quite cold when exposed to the wind, it was warm in the lee of the house.     My next cuppa I had sitting in the Love Shack at the bottom of the garden, and fell asleep watching the washing dry:   must remember to take a book with me the next time.
20.30     Having seen some of the Sc…

Feeling happy .....

16th January 2018 (Tuesday) .... 11.00    Lovely morning in Sussex;   sunny with a brisk wind.   The brisk wind is taking a couple of degrees off the temperature, so it is cool.   Actually, I’m feeling more like myself today .... the first time I have felt really good for a couple  of weeks;  however I’m not going to overdo things .... but I will bumble downtown to buy a few postcards, and have a  cuppa,...  and a toasted T- cake.

16.30     Today I met “Addison” .... and she has stolen my heart.... totally!   I was having the above mentioned tea and tea cake, in ‘The Centre’, after a wee shopping session:   sitting at the next door table was Addison, with her Mum (oops .... I forgot to mention that Addison is seven months old) and her Auntie.     She, Addison, was just so cute, smiling as only seven month old babies do.   According to ‘Mum’, she is a bundle of mischievous energy .... already crawling, all over the place.
Just as I finished my tea, and as  I was blethering to Barrie, J…

Sunny Sussex; about 2000 feet away ......

Image
15th January 2018 (Monday) .... 10.00     Mmmmmm ... it’s “wet and windy”, as was forecast for the Southeast this morning, but.... the rain should move away after lunch, leaving us with ‘sunny spells’ and showers:   it is not a morning that has me wanting to go out!     The good news is that my throat is feeling better, but I still feel under the weather ..... probably because of the weather.    Another day of rest won’t go amiss;  though I do ‘plan’ to go out in the afternoon.... even if it’s only for a turn round the block.   In the meantime I’ll do some browsing on the computer.

22.30    Oh my word ..... I have been a busy boy, on what I thought would be another ‘rest day’.    The weather was seriously dreich up until about midday, when the wind increased in strength, bringing heavy showers with it.     By this time John and I were down in Eastbourne ASDA’s, where John does his shopping:   on the way down, it’s 18 miles from Uckfield to Eastbourne, the sun had broken through and i…

Sunny Sussex .....

Image
14th January 2018 (Sunday) ..... My word .... the sun was in a frolicsome mood this morning;  it flooded my bedroom with ‘get up and go’ at the crack of dawn.    I went downstairs and had breakfast!
My legs feel like walking this morning, but I’m not going to overdo it;  normally that’s what I would do.... and end up shattered.     We’re going to the “Blackboys Inn” for lunch, so I should get a few photos, and a bit of exercise then.

20.00     It has been a lovely day;   more like the “Sunny Sussex” we know and love.   We went out to the “Blackboys” for lunch;  I didn’t expect it to be as busy as it was the last time we were there .... but it was.     There’s no doubt about it the food is excellent, and the atmosphere,  relaxing and comfortable.   This is where one of the two Burns Suppers that Michael is doing (on the 26th and 27th of January), is going to be held;   the other being at “The Forester’s Arms” in Fairwarp.    After we left the “Blackboys” we went to the “Foresters” w…

Feeling brighter .....

13th January 2018 (Saturday) .... 10.00     we have another uninspiring morning, grey and cold.... a good morning for staying ‘in’.     Most of the UK is under this blanket of cloud... the exception being all the way up the western coast, where it is raining.    There is one bright spot  in all the greyness .....   my throat isn’t sore, and my voice is coming back.... hmmm .... that’s two (bright spots).    Actually there are three;   I’m also feeling brighter!     I’ll have ‘today’ as another rest day, which should have me, near enough, back to normal by tomorrow.

22.00      I feel better after a couple of days of R & R, and I’m now well on the road to recovery.   In the afternoon we watched a film, of the Forth Road Bridge being built;  by a local, amateur filmmaker, Jim Hendry, who lived in Edinburgh, where he worked for the Department of Agriculture.   Jim had decided to film, on his  8mm cine camera, the work, from beginning to end.   After a few trips to the site, he was invi…

Bonnie morning ...

12th January 2018 (Friday) .... 10.00    Although it’s overcast, the cloud layer is higher, and it’s therefore much brighter, than it was yesterday, with a clear sky towards the South;   a bonnie morning ..... much the same as up in Fife, except we are warmer.    Everything is quiet outside;  the ‘plan’ was to stay ‘in’, and warm in an effort to shake off the remnants of the cold;  however I’m feeling perky so the ‘plan’ may change ....  I’ll see how the weather is later.

18.00     Our weather remained dour all day.... in fact the sky became ‘heavier’, and it looked like it was raining on the South Downs.    I’ve had a happy day staying in!    Feeling creative, and, it being a perfect kind of day, I made a batch o’ scones.... then ate a couple.    Funny thing is that the scones I made are to the same recipe (the Bero book) that I use at home, yet they taste better made in Janice’s oven.    It, Janice’s oven, is electric, and fan assisted .... the temperature seems much more accurate th…

Overcast and cold ....

Image
11th January 2018 (Thursday) .... 10.00    Oh my word ....we have an overcast and damp start to the morning;  it’s not raining but we get occasional spells of light drizzle..... and the wind, which is light, is from the Northeast.     The problem with a Northeast wind is that the smoke and pollution of the London area drifts down to bonnie Sussex;   so it’s not a morning for going out and about.  The sky might break up, so that I can go out in a wee while, but  it’s not very promising looking at present.
21.00     I did go out....down to Tesco’s for some ‘bits and pieces’, then into The Centrefor a bowl of soup and a cuppa.... and a quick blether with Barrie.   It wasn’t really a day for going out, (although the shops were busy) as we had light drizzle on and off most of the day.... and the forecast for tomorrow is more of the same;   a good ‘research’ day I’m thinking.   I’ll have a look at Uckfield in WWII .... had the Germans invaded Britain, Uckfield would have been in the front li…

Uckfield ....

Image
10th January 2018 (Wednesday) ..... 11.00     Yessss .... we have a bonnie Sussex morning;  bright and sunny with very little wind.     Janice found a site on FB called ‘Memories of Uckfield’, which, like Elie and Earlsferry History Society, is loaded with photographs, and personal memories of the Uckfield of older times:  there’s even a photo of Uckfield  House which was demolished to make way for a huge housing estate.     It appears that planners and architects have never loved Uckfield .... unlike the developers, who must have made a lot of profit from the housing estates that surround, what remains of the old part of town.    Thankfully there are photographs to let us see the Uckfield of ‘yesterday’;   I say 'yesterday' because the Rev Edward Turner of Maresfield, and Vice-President of the Sussex Archaeological Society, wrote 170 years ago:  “in truth, this place (Uckfield) is singularly modern, with almost everything of antiquarian value having fast disappeared over recen…

Grey, but interesting, morning ....

Image
9th January 2018 (Tuesday) .... 09.00    We’ve got a grey, and not very exciting looking morning in Sussex, but at least it’s dry.    It’s not the kind of morning to attract this boy outside.... but I will have a walk as far as ‘The Centre’ for a cuppa, and ... I’ll go into the Library to see what they have in the way of local history books.
14.30     Janice was going downtown, so I got a lift down to the main Car Park, which is not far from my target for this morning .... Uckfield Library.    Uckfield Library is well endowed with Local/Sussex History books;  and the lassie on the desk was very helpful.    She, the lassie on the desk, may be the latest addition to the ever increasing list of girlfriends.... oh ....and I also found a few interesting books.   After the Library my next port of call was Tesco’s, then into the Centre for a bite to eat.   The Centre provided a pleasant surprise;   Lee-Ann was working.    I did see Barrie but only in the distance, and he was outside while I w…

Balcombe viaduct ....

Image
8th January 2018 (Monday) ....  11.00    Janice, Michael and I went to the Balcombe viaduct yesterday;  it’s an impressive structure, and there is a legitimate ‘walk’ round the viaduct, with a stop at a garden centre half  way round.    However, with all the rain we’ve lately the walk had been turned into a  sea of slippery mud.     Normally I would ‘go for it’, the need to get the photographs overriding all else, but after venturing about 50 metres over the path  Michael and I both decided that it was too slippery for me;   I’d most likely have ended up on my ‘butt’.     Michael persevered and got the photos that I wanted;   I got some general shots.    It is most definitely a ‘wellie boots’ walk in the conditions that prevail:  although it was a bonnie day yesterday, it will take a series of bonnie drying days, to make the walk across the field passable with normal footwear.    It’s a beautiful structure, 1450 feet long, built with 11,000,000  bricks  shipped across from Holland, a…

Mmmmm ....Balcombe viaduct? .....

7th January 2018 (Sunday) .... 09.30    We have a ‘bright, breezy and cool’ morning, with, non threatening looking, clouds scuttling over from the Northeast;   although a nice morning for a daunder, it’s very windy, and thus cold, so we might leave the viaduct walk for another (warmer) day.

Peaceful morning ....

Image
6th January 2017 (Saturday) ..... 10.00    It’s a grey and quiet morning down here in Sussex ..... one of those mornings when everything seems to be standing
still;  everything that is except a pair of Wood Pigeons in the ‘big tree’, who are ‘in love’ and contemplating beginning a family!    My ‘plan’ is to go for a walk in a wee while.... ‘uptown’ for a change of direction.

16.00     I’m not sure of the compass points from Uckfield;  what I do know is, that  the wind is from a completely different direction to what it was yesterday.    Assuming that London Road points towards London, the wind is coming from the East .... and it is very raw and cold.     I was going to go ‘round the block’, but changed my mind because of the raw air.    It’s strange living on a housing Estate, surrounded by houses, but,  there’s hardly ever anyone to be seen;   today has been particularly quiet.    Actually .... I’ve seen mair activity on Ferry Road!    Perhaps everyone has been resting after the ‘holi…

Heavy hail first thing ....

Image
5th January 2017 (Friday) ..... 10.30     Happy me/us .... we have a blue sky moving over, after a morning of heavy hail and rain showers.     In fact I woke up to the noise of hailstones on the roof and wondered what it was.... everything was white for a wee while.    Anyway all that has gone, and we have a sunny Sussex again .... and
colder.   I’m in two minds whether to do a washing .... it looks being dry, but I need a bit more of a breeze.

16.30    We’ve had a lovely end to the afternoon;   and I did my washing, which is near enough dry, and will be ironed after I have a cuppa.    Janice is off down to Brighton, with her friend Janette, to take in the ‘Holiday on Ice’ show, ‘JB’ is working, leaving Bonnie i/c Michael and I.    Actually Michael won’t be home for a wee while so I’ll do the ironing first.
I got caught in the local ‘school run’ when out for my afternoon walk;  there’s a College and Primary School adjacent to each other, so the school run is busy.... and twice a day…

Brightening up after early rain ....

Image
4th January 2018 (Thursday) ..... 10.00    Hmmm .... it’s not very bonnie this morning, being windy, with intermittent spells of light rain;  however it is forecast to clear away by lunchtime and become colder and even windier.    It’s a morning for working on the computer;   with plenty photos from yesterday to sort out.    Jings .... having said that a patch of blue sky has been sighted, so things are already looking brighter.

22.00      Janice had Bonnie (the Westie) at the 'vets' this morning for tests;  and the news is not good.     Bonnie has cancer and, although she is jumping around like a pup, she is too old to have an operation.     She is a lovable, and lovely, old dog, and  is still enjoying life so we have her to enjoy for a while yet.    But, yes it is not the 'news' we wanted to hear.    She will be 16 in April.
After a mixter maxter morning, the weather settled down to ‘windy and bright’ in the afternoon.   I went for my ‘roond the block’ walk, extend…
