Gorgeous Spring morrrrrrrrrning ....

8th May 2025 (Thursday)    80th Anniversary of VE day.

08.00 .... It's an absolute cracker o' a Spring mornin'..... wall to wall sunshine with a light breeze, a good

Somewhere in Southeast England - 1941.
morning for being 'out and about'.   I'll go out on the bike once the temperature rises... at the moment it's 8.3C.    The Television will be interesting today with VE Anniversary celebrations going on all over the UK.   And there will be, hopefully, White Smoke form the Sistine Chapel 'Lum' sometime today, to let the World know a new Pope has been elected.   By the way, there's another anniversary today:  67 years ago I arrived in Aldershot to begin my National service.

20.00    I got the bike out meaning to go up to Chapel Green in the late afternoon, but something was in the air by then and the asthma kicked in.   Pollution had been Low but was Medium  by then.  Probably traffic traffic fumes.    I brought in the washing not long ago and the air was still bad.   I'll see how the air is when I go out to put the bike away after this update.   The forecast is good for tomorrow (and Saturday) so I should get out then;  if the roads aren't too busy!   It has been a lovely sunny day.... and warm out on the patio;  but not good for asthmatics.   That said I have enjoyed myself doing sedentary things;  so I need exercise 'ra morra'.

I watched the VE Anniversary Service from Westminster Abbey (did the two minutes silence), then had lunch outside;  and read a couple of Chapters o' my book.   After my siesta I noticed that President Trump was going to talk about the 'deal we have made with the USA.   As far as I can see we're back where we were when he (PM Starmer's best friend "Donald") introduced the 10% tariff on 2nd April.  Apparently its a 'good deal'.   I watched our Prime Minister talking to "Donald" (I wish I'd counted the number of times he said "Donald" in the conversation) via 'Zoom'.  I felt embarrassed watching it.    It will be interesting to see just how 'good' this deal is.

All this time the Cardinal's were still busy electing a new Pope.   The smoke from the mornings votes had been Black.   Eventually, at 18.08 (BST) the Sistine Chapel lum belched White smoke;  the World had a new Pope.    Chosen name ....   Pope Leo XIV.   By coincidence;  about five minutes before the White Smoke, the pair of Lesser Black Backed gulls, (that have been flying in and out of camera shot), chose to introduce their chick to the World!   Absolutely brilliant.   Anyway proud 'Dad' (I'm sure he knew the camera was on him) jumped down, from the ridge onto the tiles, and fed his hungry 'baby'!

The new Pope is an American (born in Chicago), but has lived most of his life in Peru, and has dual American Peruvian citizenship.

22.30    I've had a funny old day.  I couldn't do the things I wanted to do because of asthma;  even though it was a braw, sunny day.  And the day ended with a bonnie sunset.   I'll get up early and see how the weather;  if it's quiet and not too cold I might get the bike out before breakfast.
