Nice morning ....

26th February 2026 (Thursday)     10.30 .... There's lot of 'light cloud' just now,  but it has the

look of sunny spells and light showers.    There's only a light breeze  so it's warm with hardy any windchill.   A nice morning for doing the Coastal Path.

I've had to put of going to \visit Alice as I have a mild 'bug'.... sometimes known as 'a cold';  I'm staying in and warm, but might go out in the car at some point.   I prefer going out on 'The Buggy', but not when there's the threat of rain.

I've been studying the photographs that Iain .... oops Boris took the other day of the sea damaged wall at Chapel Green House.   You can see on the photo that the original 'Black Wa', as it was called by the older generations of Ferry folk, was built atop the cliff;  eventually being replaced (and hidden) by the present wall.   It was called the "Black Wa" because the Ferry Fishermen hung their newly tarred hemp nets on the wall to dry.  (Source Jimmy, Maggie's Uncle). This took place at fishing communities all round the coast.   However, looking at the bit of the old wall we can see in the photo, the original wall was was built of black stones!   It was a 'black wall'!   The combination of the black stones and the tar would make it a real 'black wall'.   It looks like the bit of the original wall we can see, has been pointed with lime putty.

The original 'Earlsferry' fishing community cottages would be at the Boat Wynd corner of the  Ferry Beach and atop the cliff going up towards the present turning point.    The northern end of the medieval Ferry  passage from North Berwick, the remains of the ancient pier, can still be seen nearby;  but to most folk it will look like a 'rickle o' stanes'.

21.45     I never went out today;  staying in and warm to shake off this cold.    I'll feel much better tomorrow after I hit the cold with a 'Janice Toddie' before bedtime tonight.

I did a spot of work in the kitchen his morning, so it hasn't been a totally lazy day;  I cleaned out the cereal cupboard.   Tomorrow I might do a woollen wash;  the weather forecast looks OK, but I'll check first thing in the morning.

Today's photographs:  Top - the damaged wall at Chapel Green House, and bottom - Castwell Wynd.
