stimulating start to Saturday. The weather didn’t have much to cheer us up
either; this weather is to be with us
for most of the day.
He
did impress me in another way though. “Wee Sconie”, a weather watcher, had sent in
picture of Schiehallion, and the weather man ‘Googled’ the name and found out Schiehallion’s
place in scientific history: which most
Scots will know. Schiehallion was
selected by Charles Mason (1728 – 1786), an English astronomer, to calculate
the mass of the Earth. The experiment
was carried out in 1774 by the Astronomer Royal, Nevil Maskelyne (1732 – 1811),
assisted by the mathematician Charles Hutton (1737 – 1832). Away from the experiment, Schiehallion a
beautiful, and popular, Munro (over 3000 feet); with easy access, and a relaxing hill walk
to the top.

19.00 This has been the most miserable day that I
have ever experienced in Sussex; it has
been, grey, dreich and miserable all day, with heavy rain at times. Luckily there are places to go to on days
such as this; and we went to ‘The Foresters’
in Fairwarp, for lunch. Fairwarp is on
the edge of Ashdown Forest, a popular place with walkers. You’d think that, on a day like it was
today, there would be few walkers out, but that was not the case: one group, of six men, came in, soon to be
followed by a family out for ‘the day’.
There were other folks, like us, out for lunch, so the pub was
busy. The food was excellent, as was
the company: it may was a miserable day outside
‘The Forester’s’, but it was bright, and happy, inside! I fell ‘in love’.
Since
we got back to “No1” I have, watched the snooker, had 50 (it’s the perfect day
for that), downloaded a few photos that I managed to get, and generally had a
lazy afternoon. The weather forecast
for tomorrow, in Sussex, is ‘more of the
same’.... in fact there is a slight chance of sleet/snow in the morning. We are going to Geoff and Pauline’s Janice’s
sister and husband) for dinner, so the weather won’t be of
