Waitangi Day (New Zealand) .....
6th
February 2018 (Tuesday)
.... 08.30 ‘Waitangi
Day’ .... the 178th
anniversary of the signing of Founding Treaty of New Zealand, giving Britain
sovereignty over the country.
We have had some wet snow on Earlsferry overnight, .... but not much. The sky is still
overcast, so there could be
a few more snow showers on higher ground.... on Balcarres for instance. It’s not that cold, though a heavy frost
is forecast for tonight. I have no ‘plan’
for today; other than go up for the
papers.... in the car: I’ll go for a walk after the sky
brightens.... as it is forecast to do by lunch time.
19.00 This has been a real fresh winter’s day, so I took advantage of this benign weather, and had a good long walk, on the beach and golf course. It was quiet out there, though that’s understandable being that it was, and still is, very cold. There wasn’t much happening; it was as if everything was waiting for something to happen. That said, at this time of year the birds are intent on
feeding because of the cold
spell, and, with the lack of daylight hours, they don’t waste time singing etc.. ‘Blob’ has settled down to me being home
again; and, he too, is busy
feeding. A Wren (troglodytes troglodytes) joined ‘Blob’, though it was more
secretive, feeding under the bushes. The birds haven’t taken long to discover
that the feeders are back in use! Although
not yet freezing, the slight wind we have, from the North, makes it feel as if
it should be frosty.
went up to Chapel Green, late in the afternoon (at sunset time in fact), for a
quick wander: my word it was/is
cold. It is going to be frosty
tonight..... even in the ‘Royal Burgh’.
The Ivy hatches are well battened down, and the heating turned up to 22.
“It
only was a sunny smile, and little it cost in the giving’
But,
like morning light, it scattered the light – and made the day worth living!

22.00 Jim came down for our Tuesday evening chat and cuppa, during which I caught up with all the local ‘news’: and found out that the Friendship Lunch isn’t on Wednesday!
There’s
frost on top of the car so we could be in for a cold night.... and most likely
icy roads and pavements tomorrow morning:
I might have a sleep in.
